The Castle of La Ballue in Brittany, in Bazouges-la-Pérouse
History of the Château de la Ballue

Built on medieval foundations around 1620 by Gilles de Ruellan – a commoner ennobled by Henry IV for services rendered – the castle embodies the spectacular social rise of this “Farmer General of Brittany” enriched by arms trafficking. Its sober architecture, typical of the Louis XIII style, masks a tumultuous history, dating back to the Middle Ages:
- A fortress on the marches of Brittany : built at the end of the 10th century, the castle of La Ballue was a strategic fortress on the borders of Brittany, a buffer between the baronies of Fougères and Dol.
- Social advancement : Gilles Ruellan, a former arms dealer who became a Farmer General, bought the seigneury in 1615 to obtain the title of marquis.
- The revolutionary episode : in 1793, the manager Colin de la Contrie made it a Chouan hideout during the Breton Conspiracy.
- Industrial glassware : Having become national property, the castle houses a glassworks (1820–1866), the largest in Brittany, before its gradual dismemberment.
- Rescue during World War II : In 1939, La Ballue hid young Jewish and Catholic girls, then served as a refuge for the Moka college in Saint-Malo.
- EATING OUT : saved in 1973 by Claude Arthaud, who restored the castle and created listed gardens, welcoming artists and writers.
