Les roches du Saut-Roland

Forest, wet meadows and even cliffs that culminate at 173 m… In this mosaic of landscapes, a peaceful stream meanders around moss-covered rocks. You are indeed on the Saut-Roland ski area.
11 km south of Fougères, you can access the site from the village of Dompierre-du-Chemin. Calm and green, the place offers a dream place for family walks if you like beautiful stories. The shadow of the valiant knight Roland hovers. The moving legend of the "dripping stone" awaits you...

And if it was true ?
Once upon a time there was Roland, nephew of Charlemagne and prefect of the Marches of Brittany. The knight had gone to war against the Saracens. Back on his land, he crossed the site on horseback, jumping from one stone to another. The rider dedicated his first two jumps to God and the Virgin. It crosses the obstacle without incident. The third jump, dedicated to his lady, was fatal to him: Roland fell to the bottom of the ravine. At this place flows, drop by drop, a spring covered with a large rock. It is called "the dripping stone". She symbolizes the inconsolable beauty. Don't look for the stone… It too is part of the legend?! But the two large rocks facing each other give the site its character.

rocks for the roads
150 years ago, the Saut-Roland site was exploited for the quality of its rocks composed of quartzite. They were used for road construction and maintenance.
