Departmental Sensitive Natural Area
in Parigné

La tourbière de Landemarais

The Landemarais bog is located 10 km north of Fougères, in Parigné. It is one of three raised bogs in Brittany, fed by rainwater.
Protected and developed by the Department, the site extends over 26 hectares. Classified as a “peat bog of national interest” for its high ecological quality, it is colonized by plants adapted to difficult living conditions – acidity, humidity and cold. Some participate in the creation of peat, sphagnum for example.

What is a bog?
A bog is a very humid area colonized by plants – often
sphagnum moss – which grows very slowly in permanently humid conditions with little oxygen. These plants gradually create a large accumulation of poorly decomposed organic matter. Her name ? Peat.
Two conditions are essential for the formation of a peat bog: permanent water and vegetation that grows faster than it decomposes. Did you know that there are several kinds of bogs? The domed bog is fed by rainwater. The sloping bog is fed by spring water or runoff. There are also the valley bog and the pond tail bog.
