Step 1: A haven of peace for flora and fauna
The natural site of Saut-Roland is one of the fifty or so natural areas protected by the Department and open to the public. Here on 40 hectares, a mosaic of landscapes with a rich fauna and flora are available to you. The forest is home to some familiar birds like the robin or the blue tit. Listen… You will hear the Great Spotted Woodpecker drumming. The wet meadows, dotted with rushes and illuminated in spring with beautiful colorful flowers such as the creeping buttercup, the meadow cardamine, the marsh trefoil… deliver a magnificent spectacle.
Stage 2: The legend of the majestic rocks of Saut-Roland
Go back in time to the year 800, when Charlemagne, after having conquered the Marches of Brittany, sent his nephew Roland to pacify the region. The knight wanting to impress the gallery, would have one day jumped, on horseback, over the ravine.
He jumped a first time for God, the second for the Virgin. The third, he jumped for his queen. There was his misfortune, he crashed at the foot of the cliff and killed himself with his horse. From this place, it is said that a rock lets out, drop by drop, water from a spring. It is called "the dripping stone". It would be the tears of Roland's inconsolable wife. Don't look for the stone... It too is part of the legend!
Stage 3: Le Saut-Roland, a renowned climbing spot
Here you are at the foot of the majestic rock which culminates at 173 m in height! You may be lucky enough to come across a climber training on one of the two rock faces. Indeed with its 80 routes with a length of 1 m, the site is a well-known spot for amateur or sports climbing enthusiasts.
Step 4: The Saint-Blaise stream
Along the Saint-Blaise stream, take a cool break in this bewitching setting with its rocky piles that have fallen from the cliffs. Attend the wanderings of the frail dragonflies and their cousins the young ladies who particularly love this place.
