Your itinerary
Step 1: The Colas park
Located near the old Colas water mill, the Colas park is a green and relaxing setting, labeled an LPO refuge since 2020. It is embellished with two works produced during international symposia of monumental granite sculptures: “Forme d’esprit” by Kodata Kazutami and “Butterflies” by Hervé Quéré.
Step 2: The Saint-Georges canvas
In the 18th century, the cultivation of flax and hemp was abundant in Saint-Georges-de-Reintembault. Spinners, warpers, weavers produce Saint-Georges fabric. It is renowned for its quality and is exported to Spain and the colonies. The arrival of cotton and mechanization caused this activity to completely disappear in the early 1900s.
Step 3: The many architectural details
Facades in granite cut stone, decoratively carved window sills, semi-circular doors…. Be attentive as you cross the villages and observe the numerous architectural details of the buildings, witnesses of rural architecture and local granite-making know-how. This wealth allowed the municipality to be labeled “Commune of Rural Heritage of Brittany” in 1999.
Step 4: The 80 cafes of Saint-Georges
Granite quarries were numerous in the region. Nearby, we often found bistros. In Saint-Georges, it is reported that at the beginning of the 20th century the town had nearly 80 cafes, 80% of which were located in the countryside. There is only one left today in the heart of the town.
Step 5: The bocage landscapes
With its network of bocage hedges, shaded sunken paths and embankments planted with trees, Saint-Georges-de-Reintembault can congratulate itself on having managed to preserve its bocage landscapes. Here, the pastured meadows where the granite is exposed, the valleys follow one another and offer bucolic atmospheres. A cultural element of the Breton rural landscape, the bocage has a particular importance for biodiversity. A refuge area for fauna and flora, it plays a very important role as an ecological corridor by ensuring the connection between woods, meadows, wetlands and cultivated areas.
