Fougères Public Garden - view of sculpture

The Public Garden continues to attract artists. Victor Hugo, wrote about this remarkable garden during his trip to Fougères in 1936.

I saw it in the sun, I saw it at dusk, I saw it again in the moonlight, and I never tire of it. It's wonderful.

Balzac, invited to Fougères by his friend General de Pommereul, was also inspired by this garden during the final episode of his work “Les Chouans”.
Today the Public Garden hosts a sculpture of Marc Didou.

In summer the Garden hosts the temporary exhibition “Place for the Arts”.
In winter it lights up under the decorations of Fairy Gardens.

The Val Nançon Garden

Insect hotel-Jardin du Val Nançon Fougères

As its name suggests, this garden runs along the Nancon River in a valley, so very cool! Located at the foot of the ramparts, this garden is the best way to continue your journey through Fougères between the Castle and the Upper Town.
Laid out over 2 hectares, the Val Nançon is made up of a succession of gardens as varied as they are atypical: family gardens, a botanical garden, a priest's garden, a vegetable cage, etc. Combining classic and contemporary plantations, between flowers and grasses, take the time to stroll or stop for a picnic break in the shade on the landscaped areas.

A garden committed to protecting the environment

So many surprises in this garden! Have you noticed its inhabitants?
On one side we have the foraging bees sheltered by tall trees in the eight hives installed by a local beekeeper who gathered more than 360 bees (and 000 in winter)!
Alongside bees and bumblebees, ladybugs, spiders and butterflies hide in the insect hotels in wood. Listen to the birds! The Jardin du Val Nançon is labeled “LPO Shelter” because it works to protect biodiversity.
Among the animals in the garden, the most adventurous remain the small ditch goats (a local endangered species). Watch them climb in the thickets, they will delight the children!
It is a whole space dedicated to biodiversity which was created by the City of Fougères as part of aeco-grazing.

When art goes green

In the Jardin du Val Nançon, we discover the artist's "Work to Life" Louis Marie Catta, contemporary glass sculpture symbol of peace and the meeting of world cultures. Miscellaneous sculptures are scattered throughout the Garden, it's up to you to discover them through the foliage...
